Tasra Surf & Flow in Imsouane

Learning to Surf in Imsouane: A Beginner’s Guide

Imsouane is one of the best places in Morocco to learn to surf. The Bay has a long, slow, sandy-bottom wave that gives beginners time to stand up and ride, and the village is quiet and easy-going. Here is what to expect, and how to choose the right surf camp in Imsouane.

Why Imsouane is great for beginners

  • A forgiving wave. The Bay is sheltered from the biggest swells and peels slowly along the point, so waves are softer than on open beaches.
  • Waves all year. Summer brings small, gentle days that are ideal for first lessons; winter has more swell for progressing.
  • Warm enough water. About 17 to 21°C, comfortable in a 3/2 mm wetsuit.
  • Small and walkable. Everything is close to the beach, so you can surf, eat and rest without a car.

What a typical surf day looks like

Most beginners surf once or twice a day. A lesson usually starts on the beach with a warm-up and a short theory session on safety, paddling and popping up, then moves into the white water where the instructor helps you catch waves. After two or three lessons most people can stand up on their own; after a week many are riding along the face of small waves at the Bay.

How to choose a surf camp in Imsouane

When you compare surf camps in Imsouane, look at:

  • Location. Being close to the Bay means less carrying of boards and easy checks of the conditions.
  • Qualified instructors and small groups. Ask how many students each instructor takes in the water.
  • What is included. Lessons, board and wetsuit, transport to other spots, meals and airport transfers all change the real price.
  • Flexibility. A good camp adapts the spot and the time of the session to the tide and swell, not to a fixed timetable.
  • Reviews. Read recent reviews on Google and Booking.com to see what guests say about the teaching and the atmosphere.
  • Room choice. Some people want a dorm and a social vibe, others a private room to rest after surfing.
